SPRAWL zero Story and Lore

SPRAWL zero is a prequel. You do not need to have finished 2023’s SPRAWL to understand the demo, and this page stays light on ending spoilers because the campaign is still launching September 8, 2026. It exists so the radio chatter in The Graveyard is not just noise. For how to survive that chatter with a gun, stay in Getting Started and combat.

The city

The Sprawl is an endless cyberpunk megalopolis under military rule and cult weather. Official copy is blunt: a city on the brink, factions known and unknown grabbing the reins. Aesthetics quote the golden age of 2000s console shooters — not only the gunfeel, but the idea that a level is a place with a roof and a politics, not a corridor of arenas.

You move through compounds, rainy streets, industrial cuts, and tenement canyons. The demo’s two maps, The Graveyard and Buried, are slices of that argument. Later chapter names already public on achievement lists — Domination, Adusta Terra, God’s Light, Maeth, Eden, Acrophobia — tell you the campaign intends to keep changing the neighbourhood, not repeating one alley.

FIVE

You play as FIVE, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier controlled by the Junta. The number is the point: the original SPRAWL starred SEVEN, a disgraced special-ops soldier on the other side of this history. FIVE is earlier, still on the leash, still taking orders from a commanding officer named Laida.

FIVE is not written as a quippy hero. Previews have called the character a bad guy among bad guys. The gloves, the Shield, the Rushdown — those are occupation tools. If you want a power fantasy, the game will give you one. If you want a clean conscience, look elsewhere. The abilities page is mechanical; the story is that those mechanics are what the Junta installed.

SILAS and IMAGO-DEI

The brief is to eliminate SILAS, leader of IMAGO-DEI, a radical techno-religious group. The cult has hardware, compounds, and enough reach to destabilize the city. They captured an experimental augment that interfaces with FIVE’s systems — the demo’s excuse to hand you new toys, and a lore flag that the cult is not swinging pipes in an alley. They are competing for the same cybernetic future the Junta claims to own.

IMAGO-DEI squads in the demo are the face of that war. Captains, grenades, streets. See enemies for behaviour. Here, just remember they are not random gangers. They have a leader with a name the entire marketing campaign repeats.

The Junta

The Junta is the militarized government. FIVE is its asset. Laida is the voice. The original SPRAWL eventually pointed SEVEN at this same regime; the prequel is the era when the leash still feels like a uniform. That tension is the plot engine. Reconcile your truths or succumb to the Sprawl, the store page says. It is not being subtle.

Junta weapons in the world are a mechanical tell and a story tell. The government builds tools that work on Amalgams. The cult builds tools that work on people. You will use both because FIVE is a scavenger even when FIVE is an officer.

How this sits next to SPRAWL (2023)

The first game was a blood-soaked 90s pastiche with parkour, a voice in SEVEN’s head named FATHER, and a march toward the Spire. SPRAWL zero is the 2000s console homage: grounded movement, smarter squads, Gravity Gloves instead of wall-run identity. Same city-state, different decade of shooter history, different number on the helmet.

You can play this prequel first. MAETH has said as much. If you already know SEVEN’s story, watch for Junta language and for how IMAGO-DEI might explain later scars. If you do not, treat SILAS as the boss-shaped objective and FIVE as the weapon that might outgrow the hand that holds it.

Demo story beats worth noticing

Laida’s opening: suspected rebel compound, no survivors, missing recon team, stolen augment. The Graveyard is the compound. Buried is the city answering back. Radio lines about memory, autonomy, and directives are not flavour — they are the theme listed on the trailers. Listen once without shooting if you care; then go back to throwing empty guns.

For the calendar around all of this, use release date and demo notes. For official channels, use links. This wiki will expand story pages after September 8 instead of pretending the remaining chapters have already been played.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for FIVE's first hours in the Sprawl.

Is SPRAWL zero a sequel or a prequel?

A prequel. It takes place before 2023's SPRAWL, with FIVE instead of SEVEN. You do not need the first game to follow the demo.

Who is SILAS?

Leader of IMAGO-DEI, the techno-religious group FIVE is ordered to eliminate. The full confrontation belongs to the September 8 campaign.

Who is FIVE working for?

The Junta, via commanding officer Laida. FIVE is a cybernetic asset, not a free agent, at the start of this story.

Will this page spoil the ending?

No. The campaign has not launched yet. We only use publicly stated setup from trailers, the Steam page, and the demo brief.
